This project was the subject of a two-stage architectural competition organised by the RIBA and sponsored by a Midlands transportation company. Our design was one of four selected for the final stage.

The layout is organised to channel pedestrian access to the bus stands through 'St. Paul's Square'. The structural system is designed to relate to the diagonal fall of the site and to define the space occupied by each bus and its associated waiting area. Ventilation and daylight are provided by means of a perforated canopy, which offers a series of triangular apertures strategically placed above the rear (exhaust side) of each bus. The canopy shells rise to the north-east, away from the prevailing wind.

In addition to meeting the operational demands of the bus station, the design seeks to provide a series of public spaces of an appropriate civic quality. A square, with a formal arrangement of trees, provides a threshold to St Paul's Church.
