The Calls

A design competition for a vacant waterfront site in Leeds.

Concept: Inspired by the site context the scheme is mixed use office building conceived as a distinct crystalline form connecting to the water and marking the bend in the river.

Approach to site: The site marks both a distinct articulation in the river frontage and a termination of High Court, which meets The Calls at an oblique angle. As this site provides one of the few visual connections to the river from the north bank we propose to maintain framed views from The Calls.

The triangular shards and their juxtaposition reveal specific connections unique to the site and create a public space to the side of 38 The Calls.

Sustainability objectives: The south facing glazed river and entrance corners provide a solar enhanced climate buffer to the main glazing areas of the offices.

The river atrium provides the main sustainable strategy:

moveable dichroic and PV fins/baffles to control sunlight/daylight and provide electricity
rainwater collection filtered through plants in vertical green wall
renewable energy through water source heat pump
climatic buffer for stack ventilation winter preheating and summer cooling
